It’s not unusual for the budding driver to ask this question so I thought I’d give a quick, simple run down here.
Firstly, you’ll need to get a provisional driving licence from the DVLA – you can do that here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
Once you have your provisional licence you can begin your lessons from the date of your 17th birthday (or 16th birthday if you get or have applied for the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment).
Whilst learning to drive, you can be supervised by anyone over the age of 21 who has held their full licence for at least 3 years. A driving instructor is best placed to do this as they have lots of experience helping learners, dual controls for your safety, and a good understanding of test standards.
Before you can take your practical driving test you’ll need to complete the theory test. This includes a multiple choice section and the hazard perception test (more about these in a future post!).
Once you have passed the theory you have 2 years to obtain your driving licence, failure to do so will result in you needing to retake the theory test.
Lastly, you’ll need to take the driving test at your local test centre! The test lasts for about 40 minutes, during this time you’ll be asked 2 questions about how to carry out vehicle safety checks and operate controls, complete 1 reverse manoeuvre, and drive for 20 minutes independently using either a sat nav or following road signs. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop. If you are successful in obtaining your licence you will be legally allowed to drive from that moment on with your certificate, and your new licence should arrive in the post within 21 days.
