What does the theory test entail?

Before you take your driving test you’ll first need to pass your theory test. This comprises of 2 parts, 50 multiple choice questions and the hazard perception test.

The multiple choice section requires you to answer 50 questions designed to test your knowledge of UK road safety. These are based around three books: The Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs, and Driving: The Essential Skills. You’re required to score 43 or higher to pass this part of the test.

Once you have completed the multiple choice part of the test the hazard perception test will begin. This is a series of 14 video clips which will move through everyday driving scenarios requiring you to click when you see a developing hazard. You’ll be marked out of 5 for each hazard, spot it early and you’ll receive the full 5 points but the longer you take to notice it the lower your score will be. One of the clips will feature 2 hazards but you won’t know which clip so make sure you watch carefully until the very end. You’ll need to score 44 out of a possible 75 to pass this part.

At the end of the test you’ll be given a letter with your results on and a brief breakdown of your score. You’ll need to pass both parts to have passed the theory test. You now have 2 years in which to gain your full licence otherwise your theory will expire and you’ll need to do it again.

I’d strongly recommend that anyone thinking about taking the theory test buys a copy of the books referenced above and considers downloading the DVSA Theory Test Kit App (this includes a copy of the Highway Code). More information about the app can be found here.

If you’re struggling with the theory, don’t hesitate to discuss it with your instructor. I offer theory sessions to anyone who needs the extra guidance and will be able to suggest different techniques for learning the information if you’re struggling. If you have additional requirements, such as needing a reader or extra time during your test, this is possible too with the appropriate evidence. Your instructor should be able to help you to arrange this.

When you’re ready to take the test you can book it here.
