This manoeuvre was added to the driving test in December 2017. Whilst it is preferable to reverse into a car parking space as it allows better vision on exiting the bay, the DVLA have recognised that many people will prefer to drive forward into a space as it allows better access to the boot of the car. So, what is expected of you if you get this manoeuvre during your test?
You will enter a car park and the examiner will explain to you that they would like you to drive forward into a space of your choice. This will usually be to the left or right, although there is nothing prohibiting you from driving into a space directly in front of you if the car park allows it. You will need to check that it is safe then give yourself plenty of space by positioning on the opposite side of the road to the bay that you have chosen. Remember that when you steer into the bay you are likely to swing over the adjacent bay, the one furthest from you, so it is best if there isn’t a car parked in it!
Once you have steered into the bay, straightened up and stopped you should secure the car with the handbrake and put the vehicle into neutral. The examiner will then ask you to reverse out of the space, steering either to the left or the right, but not entering the bays behind you. Once you have put the car into reverse you’ll need to have a good look around. If there are vehicles parked in the bays beside you remember to allow extra room before steering as the front will swing out as you steer. Taking it very slowly to allow yourself time to look around you well, reverse out of the space, steering full lock when it is safe to do so. Remember to be ready to stop or alter your steering if you feel you are coming close to any other vehicles. Once the front of the car is pointing in the direction you wish to go, straighten the wheel and stop. You can now put the car into 1st, check it’s safe and exit the car park.
