Hello again. Just an update on how the driving test in England is being affected by the ongoing covid restrictions as a few pupils have asked me again recently. Nothing much has changed since last summer when normal tests originally began again after the first lockdown. It is possible that we will get some different guidelines as lockdown measures continue to ease though, in which case I will update you all again then.
Here are the main things you need to be prepared for if you have a test soon:
- Bring a pen. Instead of signing the test declaration on the tablet computer you will sign a bit of paper, they prefer you to use your own pen for this as there will be less cleaning involved. You will of course still need to bring your licence, theory results letter and booking confirmation as usual.
- Wait by the car. We will not be going into the test centre to wait for an examiner. Instead we will wait near the cars and when an examiner comes out and calls your name you will ensure you have your mask on (unless exempt) and walk over to them. I will not accompany you for this. Instead I will be permitted to enter the test centre if there is enough space, or I will wait outside. Either way, I will stay there and await your return.
- Throughout your test the windows will be open (just like during lessons), this will be 2 windows, usually the back ones. If you struggle to hear the examiners instructions due to the wind noise please inform the examiner.
- The test may be terminated early. Usually, you have a full test regardless of if you pass or fail. However at present if you sadly fail the test, they will return to the test centre via the swiftest route to minimise time spent in an enclosed space.
- When you return from your test I will open the car door and listen to the feedback from outside the car, rather than sitting in the back as I usually would.
Thats the main differences, if you want any further information don’t hesitate to ask me or leave a message in the comments which I will endeavour to answer swiftly for you.
