Learning to drive with additional needs

I qualified as a driving instructor 6 years ago and have found the job extremely enjoyable and rewarding. Around 2 years after I began instructing I decided that I would like to draw on some of my previous experience of working in a secondary school and start to specialise in helping people with additional needs. I was finding that I was getting a lot of enquiries of this nature anyway so I searched for a couple of additional courses to attend in order to hone my skills a bit more.

So often the calls I would receive from people with additional needs would start with “I had a driving lesson with someone else and they told me I’d never be able to learn, but I really want to try and it would make such a huge difference to me to be able to drive”. Now, if you have additional needs this does not necessarily mean that you are unable to learn to drive! We all have different abilities and skills, and when it comes to learning something new, like driving, we just need the person guiding us to understand how we think and tailor the lessons to those needs. I have been teaching people with additional needs for around 4 years now with great success.

What are additional needs? These could be anything from anxiety and depression, ADHD, Aspergers, dyslexia, autism and dyspraxia to physical needs to assist with mobility issues. Unfortunately I do not have an automatic vehicle, so if you are looking for help due to mobility issues I may not be able to assist, but you can have a look on this website they will be able to help you find someone in your area https://www.disabilitydrivinginstructors.com

So, if you have additional needs (don’t worry if it doesn’t fall under any of the headings previously listed) please give me a call so we can discuss lessons. I offer everyone a free home visit before the first lesson as this gives us a chance to say hello and ask each other any questions before we start the lessons. Parents often like to be in this initial meeting to ask questions as well and I’m always happy to facilitate that – if the pupil is also supported in their learning at home it really helps. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
